Svellnosbreen 2002

The trail starts from Spiterstulen in Jotunheimen, and it's a two hour plus up to the glacier for untrained bodies.
The trip begins at a seductive ascending pace up through the valley, but turns steeper and steeper as you move ever upwards. The last part up is the toughest. Up by the glacier you have a seductive panorama of Visdalen, Styggehø and all the other surrounding peaks and glaciers in front of you, and the huge Svellnos glacier towering above you.
After a breather, the guides divide the daytrippers into rope-teams, and you put on icegrips on your boots. At this point you have to cover up your body and put on gloves. The ice is razorsharp many places, and scratches takes forever to heal, due to ancient silt and bacteria in the ice. Sunglasses protects the eyes from the intence glare at this altitude.
Then it's onto the glacier and in through the icefall. Huge towers, caves, rims are traversed, and is a spectacular experience.
To move in here without guides and the proper equipment is very dangerous. A cave or cliff one day is gone the next. The ice moves ever down at a steady pace....
